So begins the ChunBuKyung, a 9,000 year old text brought forth into this world by an enlightened sage in what is now Korea, and handed down through the ages in 81 characters. Many of the characters are numbers, which, like the ChunBuKyung, different philosophers or cultures have believed to contain the essence of the universe and its laws.

One (Il), the most repeated character, represents the main concept of this text, which is the oneness and harmony of the universe. All things come from One and return to One, the ChunBuKyung says.

Three (Sahm) is another important concept and represents the triad of heaven, earth, and human, or the spiritual, material, and energetic dimensions of existence. Each dimension contains and is contained within the other two and all are in harmony with one another. What we often think of as polar opposites—good and evil, life and death, heaven and earth—all share the same essence. They, and we, are all part of One.

All together, the numbers and characters represent the cyclic development and growth of everything, on both microcosmic and macrocosmic levels. As human beings containing heaven and earth within us and the ability to access the wisdom of the ChunBuKyung, we can realize our own development and growth through the ChunBuKyung. We can harmonize our spiritual, material, and energetic aspects and strengthen the oneness in ourselves to express our greatest potential and become the best version of ourselves.

One is the end of all, and there is no ending to the One.

While the meaning behind this fundamental and esoteric text has been interpreted, its full essence and meaning, which cannot be contained by symbols or language, can only be received by feeling or experiencing it. Students of the ChunBuKyung write it, recite it, and even perform qigong postures representing each character in order to incorporate and embody its pure, divine, and healing energy.
