What Makes Bamboo Salt Special?

Korean bamboo salt, or jugyeom, is not just another salt. What makes it so unique is the way that it’s made, which gives it its highly beneficial mineral properties that are not found in other salts. This article lays out the special properties of bamboo salt and different ways to experience its benefits.
How Bamboo Salt is Made
The process involves placing sea salt into a bamboo trunk that gets sealed with yellow clay. Then, the bamboo case is roasted at a very high heat (1,000-1,500℃) for ten hours. This roasting process is repeated nine times, which draws out and balances the minerals from the yellow clay and bamboo trunk.
The repetition of the high-heat roasting eliminates the sea salt impurities and contributes to the special ion balance that is not seen in other salts. Additionally, while most other salt types are positively charged, bamboo salt is negatively charged since it’s created through a fire-roasting process, making it a prime combatant that helps to support the immune system.
Bamboo Salt Benefits
- Contains over 80 minerals and electrolytes. It is the only food known to have over 80 kinds of organic minerals (like sulfur, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, iron, manganese, copper, potassium, zinc). Bamboo salt is also full of electrolytes that help to hydrate the body and regulate nerve and muscle function.
- Highly alkalizing. With a pH of 10.5, it’s a great neutralizer of acidic foods.
- Rich in sulfur. Sulfur is an excellent fighter against inflammation, particularly in the joints and gut.
- Detoxifies. Bamboo salt has detoxifying properties that can flush toxins from the body and even eliminate the toxins that cause blemishes and improve acne and skin health.
- Anti-bacterial and anti-viral. Perhaps the best feature of bamboo salt is that it has properties that play an active role in antioxidant defense for the immune system, making it a great additional remedy for when you’re feeling ill or have cold or flu symptoms.
Ways to Use Bamboo Salt
- Use it in place of table salt to aid digestion and detoxify the gut
- Place it under the tongue and let it melt naturally with saliva to manage inflammation
